چکیده

THE NAME JAPANESE HIL.L ROBIN often used in Hawaii for Leiothrix lutea (Scopoli) is an unfortunate misnomer, as is Pekin Nightingale, because the bird does not occur in the wild in Japan nor does it occur as far north as Shanghai, much less Pekin or Peipmg. Henshaw (1911: 63) recommended the introduction of this species into Hawaii as early as 1911 and noted that it lives to some extent on insects and small fruits. Caum (1933: 38-39) states that the species was first introduced into the Territory of Hawaii in 1918 by Mrs. Dora Isenberg, who liberated several birds on the island of Kauai. However, the records kept by the Territorial Board of Agriculture and Forestry indicate

Exotic Red-billed Leiothrix Leiothrix lutea numbers have increased in southern, western and central part of Japan since the early 1980’s. Unlike most naturalized birds, this species mainly breeds in natural deciduous forests. We researched the breeding bird density in a deciduous forest on Mt. Tsukuba (877 m), a major breeding area of leiothrix in central Japan, in 1994 and 1995. Leiothrix bred...

The Condor 90:339-348

For the first time, the effect of mechanical clearing of a native ohia/koa (Metrosideros polymorpha)/(Acacia koa) forest has been determined on some Hawaiian birds. Counts conducted on Keauhou Ranch, Island of Hawaii, at 6-month intervals, from December 1977/January 1978 through June/July 1983, showed that species richness and bird abundance were lower in the mechanically cleared or treated plo...

Egg color variation, but not egg rejection behavior, changes in a cuckoo host breeding in the absence of brood parasitism

Interactions between parasitic cuckoos and their songbird hosts form a classical reciprocal "arms race," and are an excellent model for understanding the process of coevolution. Changes in host egg coloration via the evolution of interclutch variation in egg color or intraclutch consistency in egg color are hypothesized counter adaptations that facilitate egg recognition and thus limit brood pa...

A comparison of the helminth communities in Anas undulata, Anas erythrorhyncha, Anas capensis and Anas smithii at Barberspan, South Africa.

Examination of the helminth communities in 25 yellow-billed ducks (Anas undulata), 21 red-billed ducks (Anas erythrorhyncha), ten Cape teal (Anas capensis) and seven Cape shovellers (Anas smithii) that had overwintered at Barberspan, revealed differences in community structure. Infracommunities in yellow-billed and red-billed ducks were characterized by low diversity and high eveness, and gener...
